Callander Crags

16 April 2026

A small team of Crawford, Moira C, Sheila, Sarah, and new Marauder Debs (welcome!) met at the station car park in Callander to assess the options.

With the rain on slightly, Ben Ledi mostly missing, low clouds, rain showers and strong winds forecast, it was agreed to execute the fallback plan of Callander Crags.

The ever keen Cosmo made up the team.

From the station car park we headed west before turning up a lane to join the official Callander Crags route.

We headed anti-clockwise on the route gently climbing to almost reach the usual Crags car park. Before reaching this we turned sharply north east before heading north west towards the Crags ridge. This was the steep part of the day with only some drizzle and the cloud threatening to lift. (there was about 300m ascent on the walk)

A final push up some quite large steps we topped out on to the ridge.

A fairly short detour took us to the summit which had the excellent Jubilee Cairn. Erected in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

There are excellent views all around with the munros Stùc a’ Chròin and Ben Vorlich normally in view, but not today.

Looking across we could see Ben Ledi still cloaked in cloud.

The crags name is well deserved and the path down required plenty of concentration to avoid any mishaps on the rocks, mud and tree roots. This section went on longer than I had promised but we eventually reached a forest track to ease the descent. Before getting back to Callander we stopped at a clearing for our early lunch stop.

Safely back at the car park we still had room for tea / coffee and cakes at the excellent Mhor Bread and Store.
