Fife Coastal Path

Our walk went ahead as planned yesterday with 7 Marauders (Pamela H, Moira C, Crawford, Willie, Mike, Fiona A and myself) meeting up in Leven.

There was some confusion as to which car park on the promenade we were to meet in - I hadn’t realised there are four - but we were all suited and booted shortly after 10.30 am and ready to go.

The weather was dry with a strong south westerly breeze - 45 mph according to the BBC forecast - so with the wind at our backs we were soon sailing along the beach, watching the waves crashing in and clouds of sand being blown about.

Quite atmospheric, we could almost imagine Omar Sharif on his camel appearing in the distance - remember the scene from the film “Lawrence of Arabia”?

We left the beach to walk through the streets of Lower Largo, where we came across the statue and plaque to Alexander Selkirk, aka Robinson Crusoe,

then a curious column with various figures, some rather revealing!

Then it was back to the beach for the stretch to Ruddons Point where we stopped for lunch in the shelter of some trees. After lunch we went through the Shell Bay caravan park (the huge pile of shells gave a clue as to the name)

then picked up a winding cliff top path which led us on to Earlsferry, then to Elie and a stop for coffee and cake at the golf course pavilion cafe.

The last part of our journey involved getting the X60 bus from Elie back to Leven, though Mike stayed on the bus all the way to Edinburgh.

Once back at our cars we were homeward bound, and luckily the traffic on neither the Queensferry Crossing nor the Edinburgh bypass was too bad.

There will be another Marauders adventure in mid to late April, details to follow nearer the time.

Regards, Jim.
