Rubers Law

Five Marauders Pam, Pamela, Shiela, Moira and Crawford met on the village square in Denholm for the walk up to Rubers Law.

Unfortunately Alastair had to drop out on the morning after suffering another adverse reaction to the Covid booster jab. Isobel was still keen to go on the walk and valiantly battled through bad traffic but finally had to abort the trip to Denholm.

The weather was nice and bright at the start with a gentle pull up out of Denholm to get the legs warmed up.

With the cold wind starting to bite as height was gained it was good to get some shelter as we climbed up through a wooded area. This had all manner of small, large, and colourful fungi growing along side the path. More on this below.

Before long we popped out on to the open hillside with a quick standing stop to prepare for the final push to the top.

Eventually the summit was reached and customary photographs snapped before dropping down out of the wind for a sheltered lunch.

Views were extensive, south to the Cheviots, north to the Eildons and beyond.

After lunch we retraced our steps back down to the sheltered wood where we stopped to chat to a woman who was excited to show us the fruits of her foraging. The pride of place being a large fungi apparently called a Penny Bun. Her polythene bag had all sorts of other fungi including a giant puff ball.

A group of local walkers had warned that the Cream Puff cafe was closed so all our hopes were on the Denholm Meet cafe delivering which they duly did, with tea/coffee and cakes providing a pleasant end to the morning’s walk.
